The United Faculty Executive Board has developed these guidelines to help members and departments understand the key principles guiding E-Board decisions on contract variances. Our goal is to ensure transparency and consistency while addressing unique circumstances that may require adjustments to standard contractual agreements.
Before submitting a variance request, please carefully review the UF Variance Guidelines to determine eligibility and required documentation.

There is a maximum of .4 load that can be banked in summer, but no specific limit to summer load in the contract (unless I’ve missed something). We have had cases where a Department has refused to submit a schedule with what seemed like excessive load in the summer (despite a request from an individual faculty member), and we have had cases where managers have denied a schedule because someone seemed to be taking on too much (although usually we have managed to talk through this and find a plan with which everyone could live). This is probably something we should address in collective bargaining down the road.
